BMR Calculator for Athletes
Athletes often have significantly higher BMR than the general population due to greater muscle mass and training adaptations. Standard BMR formulas may underestimate your actual resting metabolism. Calculate your BMR and learn about athlete-specific considerations.
Why Standard BMR Formulas Underestimate Athletes
Standard BMR equations like Mifflin-St Jeor and Harris-Benedict were developed using sedentary populations. Athletes with significantly higher lean body mass burn more calories at rest than these formulas predict. The Cunningham equation, which uses lean body mass directly (BMR = 500 + 22 x lean body mass in kg), is more accurate for athletic populations.
BMR and Training Adaptations
Regular training increases BMR through several mechanisms: increased muscle mass, elevated post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), and improved mitochondrial density. High-intensity training and resistance exercise have the greatest impact on BMR. Endurance athletes in heavy training may have BMRs 5-10% higher than predictions, while strength athletes may be 10-15% higher.
