Why Standard BMR Formulas Underestimate Athletes
Standard BMR equations like Mifflin-St Jeor and Harris-Benedict were developed using sedentary populations. Athletes with significantly higher lean body mass burn more calories at rest than these formulas predict. The Cunningham equation, which uses lean body mass directly (BMR = 500 + 22 x lean body mass in kg), is more accurate for athletic populations.
